This first written work belongs to Mercedes Silva Martín, who chose for her essay the title: “ There´s nothing a human being cannot accomplish if he tries hard enough”. This writing activity was a follow-on exercise, after we watched and discussed the film, “ A beautiful mind”

The next one was created by Pedro Cunningham of ·3rd. Polimodal, Proficiency Class. It followed a reading activity we did in class, about a speech Mrs. Thatcher – former British Prime Minister – gave for the 25th. Anniversary of the Malvinas War, back in April 2007. The students had to write a similar speech but from the point of view of an Argentine president.

“There’s nothing a human being cannot accomplish if he tries hard enough”

In everyday life, it is common to hear a person say: “I can’t do it” or “it’ too much for me”. Personally, I find myself saying it in several situations. However, I believe that when we cannot accomplish something, it is because we are not doing our best, and we are giving up to easily. It is a matter of effort, attitude and patience.

There will always be obstacles in the way, and at least once in your life you will go through a stressful situation and think you will not get through it. However, the determination and the willpower a person has, enables him to stand up after a fall, and continue to go against the flow. Even if someone fails after trying millions of times, it will be useful, because people learn from mistakes, and those are the mistakes that help us to grow up as a person. Moreover, it is likely that after a certain quantity of attempts you will get somewhere.

Other things you need to take into an account are your friends and your family. When taking important decisions, they will always be there to help you, because that’s what they are for. They will be with you even in the most nerve-racking situation, and they will encourage you to keep on going. It is also very important the enthusiasm you put into your actions. Everything depends on you personality.

In conclusion, you have to be persistent, and try to reach your goals even if there is a slim chance of scoring. If you give your best, you will feel good with yourself, and you will certainly get to the top. Try hard enough, and you will see the results.

“My fellow Argentinians, I felt compelled to make this broadcast. It falls under my direct duty to remember our brave soldiers who fought for a fair cause. I am proud of their courage. Many of them died defending this country, and it is thoroughly upsetting that around three hundred of those who came back committed suicide.

It has been 25 years since we lost control of the Malvinas. I will not sleep until we retrieve that land, diplomatically. So let us remember this 2nd of April and the ones to follow as a grieving day for our soldiers and veterans of war. That is why I now want one minute of silence, not only for those who got caught in the middle of the battlefield, but for those of us who still love the Malvinas as our own. Thank you very much for the attention."
